EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. Business Concept

  • NgocLan manufacturing plant in VietNam is a Joint Venture of CosmosLabs in US
  • Produce products utilizing significant natural resources and technological  advantages
  • Diversification based on ability and market demands

2. Infrastructures

Ngoc Lan's  processing plant utilize the advanced PCP-220 (Pressure Control Processing) to process agricultural, marine, and forestry products. The PCP-220 was designed and built using proprietary design and state-of-the-art technologies developed by CosmosLabs. PCP-220 can operate at <740mmHg in Vacuum Dry Processes (VDP) or at >200PSI in Pressurizing and Cooking Processes (PCP).

The processing plant is located on a 400,000 sqft facility in Do Vinh, Phan Rang -Vietnam.  This location has been chosen due to the abundant local resources  including 20,000 square miles of agricultural and forestry land, 100 miles of coastal marine farms,  a large low cost labor force, and is logistically located to take advantage of  world  wide transportation connections  (20 miles from Cam Ranh port, 1/2 mile from main national railroad).

Ngoc Lan is privately funded company with large manufacturing plant and Research and Development laboratories supported by CosmosLabs in the United States . Below is highlights of the facilities and equipment:

  • Fully equipped R&D laboratory facilities in the US
  • 10,000 sqft Process  building and 100,000 sqft warehouse
  • 320 KVA electric generator and transformer
  • Processing equipment for over 80MT daily production
  • Powered rail carts, storages and conveyors
  • 2,500 Kg/hr boilers
  • Three (3) 200-cubic meter silos
  • Two (2) redundant vacuum systems equipped with ejectors and hybrid liquid ring pumps
  • Two (2) large chamber, 68 feet length by 7 feet diameter, with the capacity to hold eleven 3-cubic meter wagon carts in each chamber

The plant's daily production capacity is 80 Metric Tons (MT)

Capacity:  4MT/cart x 10 carts/chamber x 2 chambers  =  80 MT/shift
Estimated yearly production can exceed 45,000 MT

3. PCP-220 Applications

For agricultural and marine products, dehydrating is a method of preservation that helps retain food enzymes and nutrients.  The process removes enough water to prevent growth of bacteria, yeast and mold, and to prolong the shelf life.

For forestry products, in order to utilize lumber for construction and industrial applications (i.e. furniture industry, wooden crafts, etc.), fresh cut lumber needs to be dried to eliminate moisture and organic bodies (i.e. insects and infective agents). For Pulp and Paper industry, PCP-220 has proven to be the most cost effective in cooking pulp using wood and non-wood materials such as bamboo and bassage.

PCP-220 dehydrating and pressurizing processes provides the most economical and  efficient method of dehydration and provides a competitive edge needed in today's  global markets and in developing countries. Designed for low maintenance, fast turn around, and consistent quality,   the PCP-220 plant is furnished with proprietary vacuum purge technology,  with an energy efficient design that surpasses traditional electric, gas or solid fuel heating and drying methods.

With its clean and no direct discharge operation, PCP-220 vacuum dry technology is the most efficient way of delivering healthy and environment friendly products to the consumer.

4. Development

  • May 1997: Ngoc Lan Corporation was founded to execute technology transfer and investment in Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan province
  • December 1997 to May 1999: Completed the first construction phase
  • May 1999 to December 2001: Hired and trained staff to pilot run various local raw material harvests from the Ninh Thuan province
  • Jan 2001 to April 2002: Developed High Pressure Process to produce non-wood pulp
  • Mid year 2002: Start operations and prepare for full production  phase
5. Market

The demands for dehydrated products increase with the constant growth of the world population. Traditional methods of drying goods are cost intensive, energy inefficient, and require expensive processing  equipment. PCP-220  is a proven method to produce cost effective dehydrated products at record low processing time.  The processing time for  drying goods in chamber takes between  2 to 3 hours.

The PCP-220 plant in Do Vinh is a business model to increase employment and  business activities.  Utilizing natural resources (forestry, marine, and agricultural products) from the local regions, the factory will transform these raw materials to finished goods for domestic market, and at the same time prepare for better quality products to supply to the international market place.

The PCP-220 plant is a perfect solution to produce variety of products such as:

  • Vacuum dried, pressure treated wood and pressure cooking pulp.
  • Dried agriculture products : Tapioca, Coffee, Beans, Corns, Cashew Nuts, Fruit and Vegetables for the Health Food Industry, etc.
  • Marine:  Fish, Shrimp, Squid etc.
  • Meat Products: Beef Jerky, Salami, Cured Ham, etc.
  • By-products from the processed materials can be used to produce animal feed or organic fertilizers.
6. Technologically Competitive Edges

PCP-220 is based on high vacuum and high pressure technologies to provide fast and efficient method of processing compared  to the disadvantages of the traditional and conventional methods described below.

Traditional Method: Energy from the Sun

  • Dependant upon  the weather (inoperative in raining weather, inconsistent moisture)
  • Labor-intensive and lengthy processes
  • Sanitary problems (dust and pollution)
  • Small quantities at a time

Conventional Method: Electric, Gas and Solid fuel Dryers/Burners

  • Energy inefficiency due to high evaporation temperature
  • Lengthy process due to low temperature heating
  • Environmental issues related to fuel sources and discharge
  • Small volume due to space requirement of air flow.

7. Case Study on Tapioca/Cassava

The first successful large-scale production utilizing the PCP-220 plant was the process of dehydrating Tapioca (manioca cassava) from the Ninh Thuan region  whose estimated yield is 100,000 MT per annum.

Tapioca by-products are suitable for Food, Textile, Paper, Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics, Adhesives, Rubber, Foam, Modified Starch, and Detergent industries.

The PCP-220  dehydration  process can be summarized as follows :

  • Clean and load raw material into disinfected rail carts
  • Transport carts into chamber
  • Apply super heated steam
  • Vacuum dry
  • Cool
  • Quality Control
  • Package  and Ship

8. Case Study on wood and non-wood pulp

Utilizing the high pressure feature of the PCP-220, wood and non-wood chip materials were cooked at high pressure in the chamber. The cooking process evaporates large portion of water in discard liquid. This helps to reduce the cost of refinery.

Excellent color and low K factor pulp is over-whelmingly received by local paper factories. The quality is far exceeded in comparison to mechanical/thermomechanical pulp.

20MT batch process can be completed within one 8 hr shift. This translates to normal daily production of 80 MT.

9. Road map

  • Focus on strategic products that benefit from the PCP-220 and local resources
  • Continue to process and to develop agricultural, and marine products through partnerships
  • Emphasize on development of value-added products including construction materials, medical and industrial absorbents
  • Expand in Contractual and Consignment Services
  • Seek joint venture to expand in bio-based products
